Walking to Boston for Safeline
The Navisite Europe team has been ‘stepping up’ to raise money for Safeline - a leading specialist charity for sexual abuse and rape survivors. Our fundraising activity will see employees walking the 6.5 million steps between our UK office in Surrey and our US headquarters in Boston.
Safeline’s vital work provides face-to-face and online counselling services, prevention projects and a national helpline offering support and advice. It also helps survivors to report abuse to the police and trains professionals to protect and support people affected by sexual abuse and rape.
Since setting off on October 25 2016, our people have taken every opportunity to walk, covering just over 6.3 million steps of the way so far. We expect to hit our target later this month, and are on track to be able to donate nearly £2000 to the charity, with the help of corporate matching from Navisite.
Of course, this is a virtual journey: the Atlantic Ocean isn’t the ideal environment for a brisk stroll. Instead, we’ve got the team to install the app Stridekick so they can count and track steps from almost every fitness tracker on the market, as well as smartphones with motion sensors.
Step-counts from the app have allowed us to publish an in-office leaderboard to show the top walkers, and we’ve noted no small amount of healthy competitive behaviour on behalf of staff to achieve and maintain the top positions on the board!
Our relationship with Safeline has evolved through our professional work with the organisation. Navisite and SRD Technology UK were tasked with helping Safeline to transform its IT infrastructure from an ageing and inflexible on-premises system to a highly reliable desktop-as-a-service setup that can be used anywhere.
That transition has now been completed, and the flexibility and reliability it has brought has considerably boosted Safeline’s ability to help thousands more people affected by, or at risk of, sexual abuse. It has used the money saved to hire extra staff within its existing budgets and its modernisation efforts helped it win extra funding to expand its activities. We’d be delighted if any readers would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts and help the charity to do even more.
