Why Trust = Transparency as VMware Environments Migrate to the Cloud #VMworld
VMware’s theme at VMworld was about freedom vs. control, and many enterprises operations teams with network, systems and security engineers are eager to start planning on shutting down or migrating portions of their data centres to the cloud so they can “be_TOMORROW. “
In order to accomplish these migrations, enterprise teams require the same visibility and access (within the boundaries of the shared responsibility model) to their current data centre and cloud infrastructure. They need to see network segments and firewall rules as well as review audit logs containing time stamps and IDs of any changes. They will continue to use the monitoring tools they know and love, and/or evaluate technologies and solutions from vendors in the ecosystem that were showcased at VMworld. And of course they want to see VMs and their associated replicated environments.
The great enterprise tools of yesterday and today, like SolarWinds, Manage Engine or BMC provide comprehensive, yet highly usable interfaces. These employ a range of technologies leveraging the ability to connect across legacy and cloud environments providing a dashboard view and accomplishing the goals (any device, any application, any cloud) that VMware described in detail about their vision:
Today, as teams research their public and hybrid cloud options they are presented with APIs for a DIY approach or a managed cloud infrastructure provider that offers a full comprehensive single-pane of glass that features all of the monitoring points:
Visible and impactful view of the overall health of their environments
Ability to quickly review and take action against any issues
Review historical trends for use in planning future expansion
View and report on usage, thus understanding their costs
On the journey to addressing today and “be_TOMORROW’s” challenges, Navisite’s Proximity Client Portal provides transparency by making key information and functionality readily accessible. It was designed and built with IT users and their use cases in mind, providing a unified, modern interface with a personalised experience.
Trust equals transparency when enterprise IT operations teams have access to the same visibility and granular details in the cloud that they have today on-premise. I’ve been super impressed as I spent the week at VMworld surveying the offerings of both traditional enterprise vendors and startups. From both sides, it is crystal clear–that single pane of glass view, with full access and actionable ability to fully manage and monitor their infrastructure–is what the majority is seeking.
